Suggested Readings To Read Through The Bible In A Year

Wednesday   December 30, 2009   Revelation 21 and Psalm 149

Revelation 21:3 (ESV) And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.

Today we read the next to last chapter in the Revelation of Jesus Christ. In this chapter is a detailed description of the New Jerusalem. The city described is built of precious metals and jewels . . . it is from reading this passage that we write and sing songs about walking on streets of gold when we get to heaven– for verse 18 tells us the city is pure gold, as pure as glass. In this book of Revelation we have read a great deal of symbolic language that gives us glimpses into events that would begin taking place in that first century and finally culminate with the second return of Jesus Christ. This 21st chapter is all about the hope we have for eternal life in Jesus Christ. I believe that it is important to take note of what John says about this Holy City that comes down out of heaven . . . in verse 2 he says the city is prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband . . . in verse 9 he says, “come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” . . . So, the question comes to my mind, is this a description of heaven or is it a description of church of Jesus Christ finally and completely redeemed?

The one thing that I can take away from this passage with certainty is this – we are going to be with Jesus. . . we will be in the presence of God and in relationship with him unhindered by any of the limitations that we experience today. Where heaven is and what it looks like will not be important at all. Being with Him is what will make it heaven. Being in a place where there is no sin is what will make it heaven. Being in a place that is filled with the glory of God that is so bright that we no longer need a sun – that is what will make it heaven!

I think of the words that John wrote in one of his letters to the churches – which may have been written after the Revelation . . .

1 John 3:1-2 (ESV)See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
