We believe that Jesus Christ has provided a way for people to live with peace and hope, even in a world where there seems to be neither . . . We would love to help you experience the hope that only He can give.

Suggested Readings To Read The Bible Through In A Year

Tuesday    March 2, 2010    Numbers 3-5 and Hebrews 11

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Hebrews 11 has been called the Faith Hall of Fame. In this chapter we read the names of numerous men and women who lived their lives in such a way that God is able to point at their lives and say this is what faith looks like – read these stories and you will know what it means to have faith that pleases the Father.

Verse one gives us a great summary statement about faith. Faith is the confident expectation that things we cannot see are more real and reliable than things that we can see and touch. At the root of this kind of faith is the unwavering conviction that God is the one who created it all, and he is the one who is holding it all together, and he is the one who will be at the center of everything when it is all said and done. As we read the stories of faith in this chapter it becomes evident that anything less than conviction translated into action falls short of biblical faith.

From the story of Abel we learn that the first evidence of true faith in God is obedience to the Word of the Lord. That is why his sacrifice was better than Cain’s – Abel did what God asked him to in the manner that God asked him to do it. Cain thought he could do it his way. It is interesting that Abel’s act of faith did lead to his death because of the jealousy that was stimulated in the heart of Cain. However, Abel’s life still speaks to people today about what it means to be a man of faith. The Lord wants us to know that faith that responds to His word by doing what pleases Him leads to eternal life.

Then there is Enoch. His response of faith in God brought and held him closer to God . . .

Noah had never heard of rain before, or a flood – but when God said it was going to happen in holy fear he built an ark. Noah’s faith revealed to the world the value of faith that believes God and the folly of unbelief.

Abraham was in a very secure place in life when God called him to leave his home and go to a place that God would show him. Faith that pleases God is faith that is willing to take a risk – willing to move out the comfort zone – willing to confidently move into the unknown. The story of Abraham’s faith reminds us that the God who guides and directs goes with us to wherever he sends us. We are never alone. God is there and He is at work in our behalf.

It is faith in the Word of the Lord that makes a difference in our life. The blessings we enjoy are the result of living by faith. In Hebrews 11 we learn that living by faith can include “whosoever will”. Faith draws a circle big enough to include you and me. There is an eternal reward for each and every person who lives to please God and seek his purposes by faith. Living by faith does not guarantee me a stress free life, but it does assure me that God has something better prepared that will make a life of faith more than worth it!
