Suggested Readings To Read The Bible Through In A Year

Friday   March 26, 2010   Deuteronomy 31-34 and Psalm 42

Psalm 42:1

For the director of music. A maskil of the Sons of Korah.

As the deer pants for streams of water,

so my soul pants for you, O God.

So begins the second collection or book of Psalms. There are 150 Psalms in our English version of the Bible, and those 150 Psalms are compilation of five different books of Psalms that were added to the official collection at different times. The second book of the Psalms, comprised of Psalm 42 through 72, were most likely compiled during the time of Solomon. Most of the Psalms in this book were written by David. However, Psalm 42 through 49 were written by the Sons of Korah. You find the story of Korah in Numbers 16. He was a man who rebelled against the leadership of Moses, along with some of his friends, and God dealt with him severely . . . as in the ground opened up and swallowed him and his possessions! Over 14,000 people died as a result of Korah and his taking lightly the presence of God and the commands of God. Somehow he had a least one son who survived that judgment. And Korah’s descendants were given jobs in the ongoing ministry of the Tabernacle where God met with Israel. One branch of his family became temple guardians, and another were assigned to be musicians and singers in the place of worship. One of the things that strikes me about the songs of the Sons of Korah is their intense love for the place of worship and the presence of God. To me it is testimony of the grace of God!

Psalm 42 is the song of one of the temple singers being exiled from the place of worship. Some have suggested that perhaps this person was with David during the days that he was hiding from Saul. They are no longer able to openly go to the central place of worship because Saul wants to kill David. The intensity of his love for God is compared to the internal drive that a deer would have for water. God created the deer in such a way that it is compelled to find water to drink. So, this writer says, “I long to be in the presence of God.” He describes some very difficult circumstances that he is going through . . . he describes the feelings of depression . . . but in the midst of all that is taking place he reminds himself of his love for God, and God’s love for him. Though he cannot see the answers to his prayers at this moment he makes the declaration that he is going to trust in God – he is going to hope in God, and he is going to praise God. In the midst of his troubles he remembers the good times he has experienced with the Lord.

For this writer, the Tabernacle or Temple represented the presence of God and he wished to be as close to God as possible. Isn’t great to know that wherever we are we are in the presence of God. To experience closeness with him begins with a thought. By choosing to pray – or choosing to give praise – or choosing to sing a song of worship, I can immediately come to the understanding that I am in the presence of my Savior and my God.. By “looking up” I can experience a fresh sense of the presence of God and know that everything is going to be all right. It is our love for God . . . and of course, His love for us . . . that will sustain us day after day.

The writer said to himself – and I think we should do the same – Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God!
