Whether you are investigating the claims of Christianity or you already have a strong and vital relationship with Jesus Christ, Faith Family is a place you can call home. We welcome a casual atmosphere where people are at home in a T-shirt and jeans or wearing their "Sunday go to meeting" best.

We believe that Jesus Christ has provided a way for people to live with peace and hope, even in a world where there seems to be neither . . . We would love to help you experience the hope that only He can give.

Suggested Readings To Read Through The Bible In A Year

Thursday   May 13, 2010   1 Samuel 3-4 & Proverbs 22:17-29

Proverbs 22:17

Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise;

apply your heart to what I teach,

1 Samuel 3:10

The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!"

Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."

Today we are reminded of the importance of listening. Samuel lived in an era of time when listening to God was a rare thing - verse one of chapter 3 says the word of the Lord was rare. Was that because the Lord had nothing to say? Had God abandoned his people? Did He not care about what happened to them? Not hardly. God had great concern about the nation that he called His own. He had a plan for their future. He wanted for them to live in the center of his blessing. But there was no one listening. People were more concerned with finding happiness and fulfillment on their own. It was about personal pleasure and personal comfort.

It was in that kind of spiritual climate that a boy of about 12 years old – sleeping close to ark of the covenant in the tabernacle – heard his name called. It was a voice that he was not familiar with. He mistook the voice for that of the priest Eli with whom he lived and served. Three times he mistook the voice. The Bible says Samuel did not yet know the Lord - so we cut him some slack in not recognizing the voice of God. But what about Eli, the high priest? Why did it take being awakened three times by Samuel before it occurred to him to tell the boy that he was most likely hearing from God? It was because Eli had simply been going through the motions of being the priest. He took care of the physical duties of the tabernacle and the ordained acts of worship, but he was not in a position that he himself could hear the voice of God. It was sin that blocked the communication from heaven. It was lack of obedience to the Word of the Lord in times past that kept him from being in contact with God.

While there are not many times in these days that people hear an audible voice from heaven, God is definitely still speaking to people who will listen. He speaks to us through his word. He speaks through the circumstances of our lives. He speaks through sermons and words of exhortation from our brothers and sisters in Christ. He speaks to us in our hearts and minds with what we call “that still, small voice”.

One thing that I have learned in the process of meeting with couples in marriage counseling is there are not a lot of good listeners. We all want to be heard, but we are not all that good about listening. 1 Samuel 3 and Proverbs 22:17 tell us we need to make a decision to listen – Lord speak, for your servant is listening. Jesus said it numerous times – he said it in the gospels – he said it to the churches in Revelation 2 and 3 . .. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says . . .

My prayer this morning is Lord, open my ears and help me to listen. Lord, I want to hear your voice. Lord, speak and I will obey. Lord, I want your will to be accomplished in my life . . . I want to walk in your ways.
