Isaiah 26:3-4

You will keep in perfect peace

him whose mind is steadfast,

because he trusts in you.

[4] Trust in the Lord forever,

for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal.


The promise of God is that with His provision for salvation comes the possibility of incredible peace.

When we put our trust in the Lord we can expect to live in a state of “perfect peace.” The Hebrew word for peace in this context is Shalom. It is my understanding that it means far more than peace as in the cessation of war. The word shalom means wholeness, health, quietness of soul, preservation, and completeness. By choosing to trust in the Lord – to keep our eyes on Jesus as our provider and protector – God says we can live in a state of peace because we know that He has everything under control. Peace comes from God, but it starts by you and me making a choice to trust in the Lord. Peace is the outcome and the blessing of putting my focus on God. Jews would often greet one another with a question, “what is your peace?” Isaiah’s answer in this song is, “my peace is from the Lord, for I fully trust in Him.” It was most likely with these words of Isaiah in mind that the apostle Paul wrote these words

Philip. 4:6-9

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. [7] And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

[8] Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. [9] Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.


We can live with a sense well being today despite whatever the circumstances around us may be because Jesus promised that he would be with us always!

One day Augustus Toplady read Isaiah 26:4 and was inspired to put to music the following words;

Rock of Ages cleft for me

Let me hide myself in Thee

Let the water and the blood

From Thy wounded side which flowed

Be of sin the double cure

Save from wrath and make me pure




Verse 2

Nothing in my hand I bring

Simply to Thy cross I cling

Naked come to Thee for dress

Helpless look to Thee for grace

Foul I to the fountain fly

Wash me Savior or I die




Verse 3

Not the labor of my hands

Can fulfill Thy law's demands

Could my zeal no respite know

Could my tears forever flow

All for sin could not atone

Thou must save and Thou alone




Verse 4

While I draw this fleeting breath

When my eyes shall close in death

When I rise to worlds unknown

And behold Thee on Thy throne

Rock of Ages cleft for me

Let me hide myself in Thee




Verse 5

Could my tears forever flow

Could my zeal no languor know

These for sin could not atone

Thou must save and Thou alone

In my hand no price I bring

Simply to Thy cross I cling
