We believe that Jesus Christ has provided a way for people to live with peace and hope, even in a world where there seems to be neither . . . We would love to help you experience the hope that only He can give.

John 17 is one the most profound chapters in all the Bible. It is what we can truly call The Lord’s Prayer. I believe that this prayer was offered by our Lord at the entrance to the Garden of Gethsemane. In chapter 13 we read of Jesus gathering with the twelve in a borrowed room to celebrate the Passover. At the end of chapter 14, after the meal and celebration of the Passover meal is completed, Jesus and the remaining eleven walk through the streets of Jerusalem, down through the Kidron Valley and into the garden at the base of the Mount of Olives. Chapter 15 and 16 record the teachings of Jesus that took place as they walked. Chapter 17, Jesus stops for a moment and talks to the Father. In this prayer he prays specifically for himself, the eleven, and then all of us who are going to believe in Him because of the faithful preaching of the eleven. In this prayer we learn a great deal. There have been entire books written by scholars on this one chapter pointing out the ramifications of all that Jesus was asking the Father for on this night before the crucifixion.

Today there is one thought from this 17th chapter that I want to focus on for a few minutes. In Jesus words to the Father we see the supreme purpose for our lives – what should be the number focus and goal of our lives. Jesus prayed John 17:1 . . . "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.

The number one purpose for our lives is to glorify the Father. That is what Jesus lived to do, and that is what we were created and called to do . . . to bring glory to God.

So how do we glorify God?

Jesus prayed

John 17:4

I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.

Something to think about . . . what do I add to God when I speak words of praise to Him and about Him? What do I add to God when I sing hymns and worship songs from the bottom of my heart? Is he anymore complete? Does it give him anymore grandeur in the heavens?

What I believe Jesus teaches us by his life and the words of this prayer is this: we glorify God when we reveal Him by our character and life. When my life is in harmony with the purpose God created me for, it glorifies God. Just as the “heavens declare the glory of God”, so does a life that is lived in obedience to His word and His purpose. Paul wrote 1 Cor. 6:20 (KJV)

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

In other words – glorify God in the way you conduct your life . . . and by the way, your life isn’t really yours, it is God’s!

Peter said 1 Peter 2:12 (NIV)

Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

1 Cor. 10:31 (NIV)

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

That could be a daunting task – whatever I do is done for the glory of God . . . my life is to glorify him. The good news is there is power available to make that happen. As Jesus started this prayer he said John 17:1 . . . Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. In other words, Father I cannot do this on my own. I need your presence in my life to be able to complete the task and bring glory to you. And that is absolutely true for you and me . . . we need God to impart his glory into our lives – into our body, mind and spirit in order to live in a way that glorifies his name on a day to day basis. Thank God that has been made a reality — Jesus said that the Holy Spirit has come to live in us, and that he would never leave us. As a believer in Jesus Christ we have become the dwelling place for the presence and the power of Jesus Christ. He lives in us. And on a daily basis we have a choice to make. Will I allow Him to be the director of my thoughts and my actions today, thus living for the glory of the Father, or am I going to live to please myself? Jesus prayed for us, and the Bible would teach us that he is still praying – that we would live in a way that glorifies the Father . . . that our actions, that our words, that our thoughts are in harmony with his plan and purpose for our lives – that we are finishing the work that he has given to us to do.

Lord, let it be so!
