Suggested Readings To Read Through The Bible In A Year

Friday    January 22, 2010    Exodus 11-13 and Psalm 12

Exodus 12:1-2

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, [2] "This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year.

God was saying to Moses and Aaron, you and the Israelites are about to begin a brand new day – this is going to be a new beginning. The events that are about to take place are among the most important events of your lives as individuals and as a nation. These events are of such significance that you should change the way you mark time with your calendar. What has been the 7th month should now become the first month — because everything else that happens in your lives will spring forth from what happens on this particular night.

Of course, we read the context about the final plague that came against Egypt and how the Israelites were spared because of the blood of the lamb that had been applied to the door of their homes and the fact that they ate the lamb. It is one of the clearest pictures in the Old Testament of what would happen when God sent his Son to be the Messiah – the Savior of the world.

I am so thankful that God has provided a way for new beginnings. Through the power of the blood of Jesus the books of yesterday can be closed and a brand new life can begin in the wonder of his love and grace. Paul wrote in

2 Cor. 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Thank God for that moment we crossed into that new life by embracing Jesus Christ as our Lord! We must never forget that moment. That is one of the things that I get out of our reading today in Exodus – we can never forget that it all starts with the blood of the Lamb. No one gets to enjoy the new life without the blood. The context also tells me that we must ever remember to keep ourselves free from sin. Just as God set the Israelites free from the slavery of Pharaoh and Egypt, the blood that Jesus shed on the cross sets us free from the reign of Satan and sin in our lives. That is something to be celebrated – it is something to be appropriated on a daily basis by walking with Jesus in obedience to the Father’s will.

While reading our text for today a chorus from the 1990's kept going through my mind. Written by Jeff Nelson and Rosemary Foster . . .

Only by the blood of the Lamb

Only by the blood of the Lamb

We’ve overcome

In His grace we now stand

Only by the blood of the Lamb.
