Suggested Readings To Read The Bible Through In A Year

Friday    February 26, 2010    Leviticus 19-21 and Hebrews 6

Leviticus 19:2

"Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: 'Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.

Most of us have no problem when God says I am holy . . . by that I mean that we wouldn’t want our God to be anything less than holy. We love the fact that Bible teaches us that one of the phrases that is being repeated around the throne of God perpetually is “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” That speaks to us of a God who is perfect . . . always. . . It speaks to us of a God that is complete, lacking nothing . . . Our God is holy. Today we are reminded that the holy God commands you and me to be holy as well. It is not a suggestion, or one of several options. It is a command - “be holy because I am holy”.

Moses went on in chapter 19 of Leviticus to share a list of directives from God of things that holy people should not do. At first read, someone could conclude that being holy is all about the things that we do not do. However, I think that if we look closely at what God is saying in this chapter we come to understand that holiness is more about what we do than it is about what we do not do. Chapter 19 gives to us a list of moral laws that are anchored in the ten commandments that God wrote into the stone tablets. (It may be a good study exercise to see if you can find the ten commandments in this chapter) The laws in the chapter are not in regards to ceremonies of worship– these laws deal with issues of character. These laws deal with the nature of God. Note how many times the statement is made, “I am the Lord.”

To be holy is to imitate God. To be holy is not so much about what I don’t do as it is about what I do. To be holy is to make pleasing God my first priority. To be holy is to look out for the interests and well being of other people – to love and respect them. To be holy is to live by the two greatest commandments in the Bible – love God with my whole being and love people like Jesus loves people.

Is it possible to be holy? Would God give us a command that we could not keep? (Share your thoughts . . . )
