Suggested Readings To Read The Bible Through In A Year

Monday   March 15, 2010   Galatians 5-6 and Psalm 32

Galatians 5:25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Paul’s letter to the Galatians is one of the books of the Bible that every believer should read, study, understand, and apply. Paul does his best to show us what it means to be saved by and live by grace. Jesus Christ has brought to us the possibility of living a life of freedom from laws that have no power to save us or change us. Oh, Paul was not saying that we have freedom to do whatever we want with whomever we want whenever we want wherever we want. That kind of freedom would have devastating consequences! Paul wants us to know that we have freedom to love Jesus and to love one another. We have freedom to serve Jesus and to serve each other from the context of love. In fact we read this morning chapter 5 verse 6 that says

Galatians 5:6 The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

The verse that really caught my attention this morning is verse 25 . . . “let us keep in step with the Spirit.” The key to living the way Jesus wants us to live is found in this verse. . . keep in step with the Spirit. When I was in high school I played the cornet in the band. During the football season our band was a marching band that put on a half time show at all the home games. Since I was on the football team, I did not ever march in one of those half time shows. However, twice we took a trip to Abbotsford, B.C. for a band competition. We went as a symphonic band, but every band there was required to march in a parade on the opening morning of the competition. That meant I got to march and play in the parade. My first parade in my sophomore year was a disaster for me. Since everyone in the band except a couple of us football players had marched in several football games the band director did not see the need for us to practice marching before the parade. We weren’t competing as a marching band – which was really a good thing in light of how often this cornet player got out of step! Thank the Lord that I was born before every one had video cameras! For me it was a very frustrating and embarrassing event! The good news is that when we went again in my senior year things went a whole lot better. . .

Back to what Paul tells us about living by the Spirit. We are called to be a people of action. Being Spirit filled and Spirit led is not a life of sitting down and watching life go by. To be Spirit filled and Spirit led means that we are going somewhere and we are doing things by faith . . . and the way to do that successfully is to follow the lead of the Holy Spirit. Keep in step. Marching in the band keeping in step meant hearing the beat of the drum and know that beat one meant left foot forward. . . . Paul is telling us that each day we get to make a choice as to how we are going to conduct ourselves, and his advice is that we choose to walk in beat with the Holy Spirit – we choose to follow His footsteps. When the Holy Spirit is the “drum major” we will live a life of faith that makes a difference – a life of freedom – a life of power. Keep in step with the Spirit.
