Thursday    March 18, 2010    Deuteronomy 6-7 and Psalm 35

In Deuteronomy 6 we find the keys to being successful in every area of our lives. Moses told the people, “ if you hear and heed the word of the Lord to you today you will live a long and prosperous life in the land that he has promised to you.” Want to know how to be successful as a parent? The answer is in this chapter. Want to know how to make sure that you have enough food to put on the table, and can afford to have clothes and a place to live? The answer is in this chapter. Verse 5 is the most important verse in the Bible. That is not my opinion, it is Jesus opinion. When he was asked what the greatest commandment in the law was, this was his answer. Love God. . . Love him with everything you have – make him the top priority of your life – love God!

The very best thing you can do for your children is to love God with all your heart, soul and strength. Watching you live out that relationship with God will do more to influence their lives than any sermon they ever preached in the church sanctuary.

Moses told the people to talk about the laws of the Lord at home – in the streets – at work – at play. Impress the word on your kids . . . write the commands in places that will be seen on a daily basis.

The key to making that happen is to love God with all your energy and focus. Because when we love God he will write his word on our hearts (v. 6) Talking the word, writing the word, living the word are not laborious tasks to those who love God – it is the natural outflow of relationship with Him. Obeying the word is a joy when you love the one who gave the word with all your heart, soul and strength. And obedience is what will lead you to success in your life. That was the message that God gave to the Israelites in Moses day, and it is a principle that still works today for each and every follower of Jesus Christ. I believe it was Augustine who was supposed to have said, “love God and do as you please.” The first time I read those words I thought this guy is a heretic! But when I thought about what he was saying, and what we read in the word, I understood what he was trying to say. When you really love God you are going to want to please him 24/7. When you love God with your whole being your only purpose and goal in life is to please him!

Moses knew that when this group of people finally went into the promised land with Joshua that they were going to be faced with all kinds of temptations to put other things before God. Sometimes those issues would be good and legitimate – until they are measured against the most important things in God’s eyes. Oh, how we are tempted with so many things today that call out for our attention! We must take personal inventory and come back to the most basic question of our relationship with God - do I love Him with every fiber of my being? Does he reign as Lord of my life?
