1 Samuel 27:1

But David thought to himself, "One of these days I will be destroyed by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me anywhere in Israel, and I will slip out of his hand."

I think I understand how David came to the conclusion that he did. I understand because I have done what he did . . . I have spent too much time meditating on the circumstances around me from my perspective instead of meditating on the Word that the Lord has given to me. Yes, Saul was out to kill David, but was there any way that he was going to be able to succeed? Hadn’t David been chosen and anointed by God to be the next king in Saul’s place? David had a “word” from God yet in the weariness of waiting for that word to come to pass David “thought to himself” and determined a course of action that led him into a place where his integrity was compromised and his life threatened by the men in his own army. As we have been reading the story of David, many times we have read where David inquired of the Lord – he prayed and asked for guidance - he talked to a priest or a prophet . . . . but in the first verse of chapter 27 it says he “thought to himself”.

Oh I understand looking for the easy way out. That is the path that I would prefer to take. But David’s story today reminds us that the easy way out is not always the best way out. David’s story today reminds us that circumstances are not always the best guide to God’s will.

Following is a poem by Carolyn N. Rhea

This stubborn, adolescent will of mine

Is making me a spiritual delinquent!

It drives me recklessly about on life’s freeways,

At times endangering both myself and others along the way.

If I bring it daily unto God in prayer,

Surely He can curb these tendencies

With His understanding love

And gently bend it to His will and way

During this difficult period of growing up

Toward spiritual maturity.
