Pastor's Blog

Primal screaming . . . foam rubber bats . . . letting it all out . . . those are just a few of the things that have been suggested as ways to vent anger over the years. And the amazing thing is that those suggestions came from people who are supposed to be educated in the science of human behavior. But three thousand years ago Solomon wrote Proverbs 29:11

A fool gives full vent to his anger,

but a wise man keeps himself under control.

Solomon said the person who just lets it all out is a fool. There are three Hebrew words used in the Proverbs that can be translated fool. The word in this verse is the one used most often – 49 times. It means someone who is characterized be a dull and closed mind. This fool is thickheaded and stubborn. By his laziness and shortsightedness this kind of fool rejects information from others. It is a fool that lets his anger rip . . .

Popular thinking has been if you just vent your anger it will go away. But that is not really the case. Just venting your anger can lead to more anger, which can lead to anger controlling you rather than you controlling it.

What we learn from Solomon is that God made as a moral beings with the ability and the power to choose our actions. . . we are to choose what we do with our emotions. . . we are to judge our emotions. We are to be controlled, not by what we feel but by what is right. When a person chooses to “let out” his anger or hostility, he is not getting rid of it, he is letting it master him.

So what do I do with my anger? I give it to God. I make a choice to do what is right – and in making that choice I release the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in me to empower me to follow through on that choice.

So, in light of the choices you have been making in regards to your emotions . . . foolish or wise? The choice is ours. . .
