Question. What makes a worship service great? That is the question that comes to my mind as I read 1 Chronicles 13 and 15 this morning. As we read about David’s desire to bring the Ark of God to Jerusalem we see that everyone was excited about the project. Verse 4 says it seemed right to the whole assembly that the ark should come to the new capital city. Verse 8 tells us that the whole congregation was totally into the worship that day – they were singing and dancing with all their might – the worship band was playing totally inspired music – it was one great worship service from their point of view. However, there was something they forgot to check into before they started this worship service. What was it that they needed to be doing if they were going to impress God with their worship? We often hear people say things like, God knows my heart and that is all that matters. Is that really true? It appears to me that David and the entire congregation had the right motives when they began moving the ark and worshiping God. I cannot see that there was any hidden agenda in their hearts. They had a desire for the presence of God to be in the most important city of their nation. Their hearts were right . . . but that was not enough. Their worship needed to be in line with God’s requirements. Their worship needed to be about pleasing God and not themselves. I wonder, is God pleased with my worship? Is it enough that I am moved to joy or to tears? Do I sing and pray to please me, or do I sing and pray to worship God the way that he wants to be worshiped?

Chapter 13 ends with the statement that the Ark of God remained in the house of Obed-Edom for three months, and the Lord blessed his household and everything he had. That is what I want for my household today. . . that is what I want for your house.
