A Song of Ascents – that is the heading on Psalm 125 in my Bible. In fact, that is the heading on the Psalms 120-134. There are a couple different traditions as to what the songs of ascents were for. The first tradition says that these were the songs that Jewish pilgrims would sing as they approached the city of Jerusalem for one of the major worship festivals. Another tradition says that the “ascent’ was fifteen steps leading up to the temple, and these songs were song by choirs of Levites. Whichever tradition is the correct one, it is clear that these fifteen songs of ascents are intended to remind the people of God of some of the basic truths of what it means to have faith in God.

Psalm 25 starts out with the reminder that

Psalm 125:1 Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,

which cannot be shaken but endures forever

We are reminded that trusting God puts us in a place of great security. Though storms come – though difficult times come our foundations cannot be shaken. However, verse 5 reminds us that hypocrisy and self -indulgence will bring the judgment of God. The peace of Israel – and the peace in our lives is dependent upon whole hearted trust in God.

Our reading in Psalm 25 stands in sharp contrast to what Jeremiah had to say to King Zedekiah in Jeremiah 21. The city of Jerusalem was under siege. Zedekiah was of the opinion that this is Jerusalem – this is God’s city and we are God’s people, surely the Lord is going to deliver us now with a mighty miracle as he has done in time past. But Jeremiah cannot give him a message of blessing. In fact, Jeremiah tells him that the only way to survive is to surrender to the Babylonians. God said I am setting before you the way of life and the way of death – it is your choice. Surrender leads to life – fighting to survive in this city will lead to death. I am reminded of the passage in the Proverbs that says there is a way that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to . . . (Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25.

Trust in the Lord. That is the only way that guarantees life. That is the only way that guarantees stability. That is the only way that guarantees peace. Trust in the Lord. The hymn we sang when I was a child says to” trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.”
