Psalm 133:1-3

A Song of Ascents, of David.

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is

For brothers to dwell together in unity!

[2] It is like the precious oil upon the head,

Coming down upon the beard,

Even Aaron's beard,

Coming down upon the edge of his robes.

[3] It is like the dew of Hermon,

Coming down upon the mountains of Zion;

For there the Lord commanded the blessing-- life forever.

The first chapter of the Bible has a couple of phrases that are repeated numerous times. Moses wrote, “And God said . . . and there was” or “it was so”. God spoke a command and it came to pass – every time. In Psalm 133, one of the songs of Ascent that was sung by worshipers on their way up to Jerusalem, David points out that there has been a blessing commanded on those who live in unity. There is a sure way to live a life under the blessing of God. You don’t have to beg for the blessing. It is automatic to those who live by the commands of the Lord to love God and to love your neighbor. David says there is something really special about “brotherly love.” The anointing of the priest would not be an event easily forgotten. The oil that God had directed Moses to create for the occasion would have filled area with fragrance . . . lots of fragrance! David said that when brotherly love prevails it is like the beginning of a new day – the sun coming up on the hills that have been covered with the dew — there is sense of freshness – a sense of life being sustained.

God commanded his blessing – the blessing of all blessings – life forever on those who dwell in unity. Jesus prayed in John 17 that we might all live in that blessing when he prayed that the Father would make us one even as He and the Father are one.

So, this morning I am reminded just how important you are to me and I to you. I need you and you need me to be able to live under the blessing that God has commanded!
