Rev. 22:20
He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon."
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
The first sentence of verse 20 was spoken by Jesus – and the last sentence was spoken by John. Jesus made a promissory statement, and John says yes Lord let it happen!
Jesus is coming soon! I remember singing a hymn when I was a child entitled He’s Coming Soon. We sang Andre Crouch’s song in the 1970's Soon and Very Soon. There was the song that many quartets sang, Jesus Is Coming Soon.
Sometimes I would sing those songs and wonder about that word soon. After all, it has been 2000 years since Jesus made that promise! What did Jesus mean by soon? Well, as we close out another year today the word soon seems more applicable than ever before. A year passing used to seem like a rather long time. However, it seems to me that each passing year picks up momentum and goes by at a much quicker pace!
As we close out the book of Revelation this morning we are reminded that this life here on earth is not all there is. Life here is merely preparation for life to come in the presence of God. We are also reminded that life in heaven is not a given for everyone. Only those who choose to embrace Jesus Christ as Savior and live by his Word are going to be welcome in the place that Jesus is preparing. The words that come to my mind today as I read Jesus’ promise are the words of the apostle Peter when he was talking about the second coming of Christ.
2 Peter 3:11-12
Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives [12] as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.
2011 could be the year that Jesus comes back. 2011 could be the last months that we have to share the gospel with our friends and families. 2011 could be it! The question we must ask ourselves is, are you ready? What will Jesus find you doing? Can you say with John, “Come, Lord Jesus”?
Jesus promise is, "Yes, I am coming soon."!!!!
