David said,

Psalm 20:7

Some trust in chariots and some in horses,

but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Truly the story we are reading right now in the book of Genesis shows us the results of when a man puts his trust in God. If ever there was a person who could have cried out with justification that “life isn’t fair”, it was Joseph. We have read how his jealous brothers sold him into slavery so they wouldn’t have to see his face again. We have read how a woman with “the hots” for him falsely accused him of sexual assault when he rejected her advances toward him because he did not want to sin against God or his master (her husband!). Joseph then spent years in prison in a foreign land for a crime he did not commit. But he still put his trust in God. He remained faithful to the name of the Lord. Because Joseph was faithful – because he trusted in the name of the Lord even when life did not treat him fairly – because he continued to live with the awareness of the presence of God and a clear conscience – in one day’s time Joseph went from being a trustee in the king’s prison to being the number two man over the nation of Egypt. In one day’s time Joseph went from being a “nobody” to a man given a royal escort through the capital city. When his second son was born a few years later Joseph named him Ephraim and said, “ It is because God has made me fruitful in then land of my suffering.”

There are two major truths that come to my mind as I read Genesis 40-41 and Psalm 20 this morning.

#1. Faithfulness will pay off. Paul put it this way in Galatians 6:9

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

#2. God can make something good out of something bad. Again it was Paul who said,

Romans 8:28

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
