Proverbs 15:28

The heart of the righteous weighs its answers,

but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil.

One of the rights that Americans want to claim most often is that of “free speech.” We cherish that right to be able to speak our mind about any subject that we desire. And while there are some attractive benefits to having such a right as citizens, one of the things that Solomon warns us about in the Proverbs is the power that our spoken words have. Words can be extremely helpful or extremely harmful— just like fire – use with caution!

In this 15th chapter of Proverbs Solomon has several things to say to us about what we say and how we say it. Verse 1 is one of the most familiar proverbs dealing with “how” we speak. Our tone of voice can bring calm or create an emotional storm. That means that the way I speak can make things better of make them worse. That is probably a pretty good question to ask ourselves before we open our mouth; is what I am thinking about saying going to make things better or worse? How can I say it gently so we move forward instead of backwards?

Verses 2 and 28 tell me to think before I speak. I am reminded of what James tells us . . . be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger. Solomon often links “gushing words” with folly and ignorance. Oh, how many times I have felt stupid because I said something before I thought about it!

Verse 4 reminds us that our words can heal the human spirit or they can crush it and leave it with a permanent wound. I had conversation this week with a friend in regards to the power of a father’s words in the lives of his children – how we carry those words in our minds and our hearts for our whole lives. It is amazing how many adults today live life filled with self-esteem issues because of the things that their fathers said or did not say to them . . . and not just in their childhood – all through our lives we are listening to the words that come our way from the significant people in our lives, and from those words we gauge how we are doing in life! Think about that before you speak to someone. Think about that when you are reticent to say the compliments that you are thinking, but decide not to say them to avoid embarrassment . . . that person may need those words of encouragement far more than your realize!

That brings us to what Solomon said in Proverbs 15:23

A man finds joy in giving an apt reply--

and how good is a timely word!

When we speak the right words with the right attitude at the right time wonderful things happen in our lives and the lives of others. And of course, we are all familiar with the inverse – the wrong words in the wrong way at the wrong time mess people up!

So as we begin this day – once again it would be wise to pray like the Psalmist, Lord may the words of my mouth be acceptable in your sight. Again this morning we do well if we pray, Lord I want to surrender my tongue to you today so that you can use it as an instrument of life and healing to the people in my circle of influence. Give me your wisdom. Help me to think before I speak. And Lord, thank you that you hear my prayer! (Verses 8, 29)
