2 Cor. 4:18

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Paul teaches us the secret for success in our walk with Christ – and for perseverance in kingdom ministry. We cannot rely on what we observe with our five senses. In the context of this letter Paul talks about the difficulties and challenges that he was facing in ministry. At times, life was a struggle. The circumstances appeared to be negative. There were people who were against him and trying to keep him from sharing the gospel. There were others who were doing everything they could to discount him as a preacher . . . and they called themselves Christians! To look at the circumstances around him, Paul could have come to the conclusion that he was in the wrong line of work. But Paul said words to the effect of; I have come to understand that there is something far greater taking place than what I can see with my physical eye – something far greater than what I can touch with my fingers . . . there is a living God at work in my life to do something that is going to have eternal ramifications for my life . . . God is doing something right now to build my inner man . . . He is doing something that will release the power of Jesus Christ in my life and in my circumstances. So instead of becoming discouraged by what I see and feel, I am looking to the One who has it all in control.

In a world of great uncertainty there is only one thing that cannot and will not change – and that is Jesus Christ . . . the same yesterday, today and forever! We rely on Him.
