Chapter 2 of 1 Kings begins with the final words of a great man of God. In his lifetime David had experienced the “thrill of victory” many times, as well as “the agony of defeat”. In his final charge to his son Solomon, David in as much says, “Son, the difference between success and failure starts with a choice. Let me tell you what I have learned through experience – some of it painful – 1 Kings 2:2-3 . . ."So be strong, show yourself a man, [3] and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in his ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements, as written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go, . . . “

David reminded Solomon that God has made some incredible promises to this family – it is God’s desire to bless us and use for his glory –but there are some conditions that we must meet in order to see those promises fulfilled. David’s charge to be strong, be a man and observe the commands of the Lord were an admonition to always remember, “Solomon it is not about you, it is all about God. Keep the LORD first and all will go well with you and the kingdom. But if you put yourself first, if you make decisions based on personal comfort or personal advancement it is going to come back to bite you. Son, put God’s ways at the forefront and you will be successful as a man and as a king.”

That is a principle that we see from the book of Genesis through the book of Revelation. Jesus taught it — Jesus lived it — “seek first the kingdom of God!”

David gave to Solomon, and to you and me, words to live . . . and die . . . by.
