The last verse of 1 Kings says

1 Kings 22:53

He served and worshiped Baal and provoked the Lord, the God of Israel, to anger, just as his father had done.

These are the words that summarize the life of Ahaziah, son of Ahab and Jezebel. Verse 22 says “ he walked in the ways of his father and mother”. Ahab was perhaps the most wicked king of Israel. He forsook the worship of God for the worship of the gods his foreign wife brought with her. And that was in spite of the fact that several times God revealed himself to Ahab– and he even repented for a short time– yet he lived without regard to the Word of God and the presence of God. And his son followed in his steps.

As I read those words today, it occurred to me that our nation is in the place it is today– in the greatest moral decline that I have seen in my lifetime because of the influence of fathers. Men who felt like they did not need to put God first in their lives – men who felt that making money was more important than worshiping God – men who felt that fishing, hunting, playing sports, etc. was their right that they should not have to give up any day for anyone - God included. It is easy to point the finger at government . . . but our government is the result of God fearing men not standing up for what is right – not raising their voices to proclaim the Word of God – not living what they say they believe and allowing the ungodly to fill the void of leadership by not being engaged. . . .

Today I am very thankful that I have a father who follows hard after God. I know God because of that influence – my son knows God because of that influence. I want to commend each father who is living the Great Commandment – you are the hope for revival in this nation – your influence on your children as you teach them to put God first in everything – and to obey His word! That kind of living, coupled with prayer, can release the Spirit of God to once more move on the hearts of people in this land.

So what will your children’s lives look like if they follow in your ways?
