2 Chron. 1:10

Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?

When God gave Solomon a blank check of prayer – his request was give me wisdom. Solomon started his reign so very well – with a heart for God and a spirit of humility. . . “Lord, give me wisdom to lead your people well.”

The Bible has a great deal to say about wisdom – and in fact, Solomon wrote a lot of proverbs that pertain to wisdom. (Too bad he didn’t read everything he wrote so that he could have finished as well as he started!)

Look at what James has to say about wisdom.

James 3:13-17

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. [14] But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. [15] Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. [16] For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

[17] But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

You can go to school and get all kinds of knowledge. You can read books and find knowledge. And so you should . . . however, more important than knowledge is getting wisdom. Wisdom helps you apply knowledge in a way that will benefit you and the people around you. Wisdom is a gift from God – and when you don’t have it – he says ask him for it (see James 1:5)

The Bible tells us that wisdom is:

greater than riches (Proverbs 3:13-16)

greater than military might (Ecclesiastes 9:16-18)

our number one need for success in life (Proverbs 4:4-9)

James tells us that when we live in the wisdom of the Lord our lives will be marked by goodness and humility. The wisdom of God will display its power in our lives in that:

we will overcome sin

we will overcome strife

we will overcome stubbornness and selfishness

we will overcome unforgiveness and vengeance

we will overcome prejudice and hypocrisy . . .

Wisdom – it what Solomon asked for - it what God gave to him – it is what established him as a great king and brought tremendous blessing on his life . . .

Proverbs 4:7

Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.

Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
