I am reminded again this morning of the first line of Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life. It is not about you.

That line comes to mind when I read the passage in Luke 9 -

Luke 9:23-25

Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. [24] For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. [25] What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?

Here in the United States we hold on to the following words found in the Declaration of Independence very tightly.We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. . .

Those words were written to protest a government that the people felt had become overbearing and unjust. And I am appreciative of the fact that their rebellion against that government led to the birth of the great nation that we now live in . I am thankful for the personal liberties that we still enjoy as a result of that revolution.

However, one of the downside results of our right to pursue happiness has been the selling of our souls for things that will not and cannot give to us real life. We can all get caught up in the pursuit of “finding ourselves”, of finding “happiness”, of finding “our dream”. Jesus makes it clear that our eternal soul is worth more than all this world has to offer in terms of wealth and happiness. Jesus tells us that the way to a life of significance and value is to give up pursuing life looking for personal gain and personal happiness. The way to life is to give myself to the pursuit of God’s will . . . every day.
